The Fantastic Architecture of the Picasso Museum
The Museo Picasso Málaga is run by the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga and the Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso.
Two foundations were created, each with its own Board of Trustees, and together they promote and support the Museum in accordance with the mission outlined by the founding donors. The Fundación Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso is the owner of the Collection, whereas the Fundación Museo Picasso de Málaga owns the group of buildings that house it. As was initially agreed by the donors, the two Foundations are responsible for the conservation, exhibition, study and diffusion of the Collection.
In order to hold the collection and to become the permanent home of the Museo Picasso Málaga a historical building of characteristic sixteenth century Andalusian architecture was purchased: the Palacio de Buenavista, with its blend of Renaissance and Mudejar elements.

A Work of Art - Jacqueline Seated
by Pablo Picasso
The building not only presents undeniable historical and artistic value, but also enjoys a strategic location in Malaga’s historic city centre. Its construction was started by Diego de Cazalla, paymaster of the royal arms, between 1516 and 1542. The Palacio de Buenavista was declared National Monument in 1939. The choice of this building as home of the Museo Picasso Málaga was also inspired by the main donor’s specific wish: Christine Ruiz-Picasso wanted a typically Andalusian palace, exactly like the main building of today’s Museum.
The fact that a historic building is infused with new life as its function is redefined does not imply that its transformation is free from problems and difficulties, some of which are totally unforeseeable. In any case, one predictable fact was the need to spread beyond the space available at the Palacio de Buenavista, especially if the new institution was to be equipped with the facilities and services required of a modern museum, such as library and archives, education centre, auditorium and restoration facilities. The two supporting foundations considered it essential to purchase several of the adjacent buildings, conveniently adapting them and integrating them into the scene, in order to hold the aforementioned services and facilities. This expansion would also contribute to enhance the old urban layout and prevent its degradation. A completely new set of buildings were therefore constructed to accommodate the temporary exhibition galleries, the restoration facilities, the bookstore and offices. All in all, the Museo Picasso Málaga has a total surface of 89.340 square feet.
This complex project of planning, design, rationalisation, re-modelling and adaptation of the building has been carried out with regard to architecture by the architectural studio of Gluckman Mayner Architects and Cámara/Martín Delgado Arquitectos working with the engineering firm ARUP as well as the lighting firm Isometrix for the outside of the Palace. The technical aspects of fitting-out, humidities air conditioning, lighting andsecurity were entrusted to some of the leading international specialists in these fields such as Ippolito Massari, Roberto Bergamo and Paul Schwartzbaum.
This prestigious group of architects, engineers and experts worked under the direct supervision of Carmen Giménez, Director of the Project, and of the Board of Trustees of each of the two Foundations that watch over the Collection and the Museum’s buildings.
